From Military Police to Family Legacy: How One Veteran Built a JDog Franchise Around His Kids’ Strengths

A ten-year story of service, patience, and building something his family could inherit.

Rob Gibson

When Rob Gibson signed on to open a JDog Junk Removal & Hauling franchise in 2016, he wasn’t just building a business. He was building a place where his family could thrive on their own terms.

This past July, Rob celebrated ten years in business, a decade built on family, service and a whole lot of hard-earned trust in his community.

Rob spent five years as a military police officer in the U.S. Army, guarding NATO sites and running road patrols out of Ft. Carson, Colorado and later Germany. Like a lot of Veterans, he carried that discipline into a long career in corporate America, 25 years as a grocery store manager. But it was watching his oldest son struggle in that same corporate world that changed everything.

A Business Built on Understanding

Rob’s oldest son is on the autism spectrum, and communication with managers was hard. Job after job ended, no matter how capable he was. Rob and his wife started looking for something different: a business they could build for him, not just employment he’d have to fit himself into.

A friend working as an IT manager at Ft. Rucker pointed them toward JDog. Rob reached out in late 2015, met the leadership team in December, and signed on by March. What followed wasn’t instant. Rob describes a patient, years-long process of teaching his son step by step. It included the entire operations of the business, running a truck, handling money, managing a job site, and it eventually clicked.

That patience paid off. His younger son, more of an introvert by nature, found his footing in the business, too. And a few years ago, Rob’s daughter came on board to manage the daily operations. Today, the plan is for all three kids to eventually take over and restructure the business as their own.

For Rob, that’s the real reward.

“Being able to build something I can hand off to my kids, that’s what it’s about. If they keep it, they’ll be set up in their 40’s in a way most people never get. That’s the legacy I want to leave them.”

Rob says his wife is the real vision and strategy of the business. A true family enterprise, built one job, one skill, and one year at a time over the past decade.

From One Tahoe to a Growing Fleet

Rob’s approach to growth reflects the same discipline he brought home from the Army. He started small, a Tahoe he already owned, fitted with a hitch, and an enclosed trailer borrowed from a friend. It was just him and his son in the early days, hauling single-item jobs.

From there, the business grew the way good local businesses do, one relationship at a time. A 2.5 month contract helping build a new power plant nearby. Local townships that needed help with fall leaf cleanup, which grew into a summer program. Assisted living communities. Hotels. Other contractors. In 2020, Rob grew to adding another truck and trailer and brought on additional crew.

Rob’s franchise now services Mahoning Township, Berwick, and Bloomsburg, PA with local code enforcement officers regularly referring business his way, a sign of the trust JDog’s Respect, Integrity, and Trust values are built to earn.

Rooted in Community

For Rob’s family, giving back isn’t a marketing checkbox, it’s a part of who they are.

Each year, they donate a free trailer to United Way for community cleanup. They help Agape move and organize donations. They’ve partnered with local food-drive organization Not Bread Alone for years, stepping in with a truck whenever they’re short handed. Each December, they help place wreaths and handle trash removal for Wreaths Across America ceremonies, then return in February to remove the old wreaths, free of charge, five years running.

“It’s part of our family organization that we are, we are Christians, so serving is the forefront of so much of what we do…we model that and instill that in our kids,” says Gibson.

He also points back to the culture JDog was founded on:

“Jerry’s vision, we took that to heart. A lot of it is you as a business owner. You have to put in the work to make it happen.”

Why This Story Matters for Prospective Franchisees

Rob Gibson’s journey is a reminder of what JDog was built for. This is a franchise system created exclusively for Veterans and military families — people who understand the value of discipline, service, and building something that lasts. It’s not just about junk removal; it’s about business ownership with a low barrier to entry, a values-driven brand behind you, and the flexibility to build something that fits your life, not the other way around.

For Rob, that meant a business that gave his sons a shot at independence they couldn’t find anywhere else, and a legacy his daughter is now helping carry forward.

If you’re a veteran or military family member looking for a way to build something of your own — on your own terms — JDog might be the opportunity you’ve been looking for.
